A multitude of services!
Using services in French at an early age positively influences the health of an individual throughout his or her life. Developed by the Fédération des Parents du Manitoba, the Dès le début… en français! programs are offered by the Centres de la petite enfance et de la famille (CPEF). The main priority of Dès le début… en français! is to encourage families to contact their nearest CPEF to benefit from the various services it has to offer.
What is a CPEF
Basically, a Centre de la petite enfance et de la famille (CPEF) is a place where parents and their children from ages 0 to 6 spend time together. CPEFs offer services, resources and activities, and are located within the schools of the Division scolaire Franco-Manitobaine (DSFM). There are 14 in Manitoba.
When parents and children gather, they’ll play, connect and learn en français. Let’s not forget that in linguistic minority communities, Francophones often have few opportunities to socialize. CPEFs help families break away from their isolation.
Games and Activities
CPEFs offer activities designed for francophone families with children from ages 0 to 6. With your little one, enjoy cooking activities, book clubs, active games and special outings. Examples of activities:
- ABC : l’univers du livre (discover the world of books)
- Bouger en famille! (active games and healthy snacks for families)
- Cuisson et nutrition (cooking and nutrition)
- Jouer en français (play in French)
- Toi, moi et la mère l’Oie (story telling)
- Bébés, parents et gazouillements (get-together for pregnant moms and moms with newborns)
- Activité du mois (monthly activity)
- Spectacles (shows)
- Ti-brin (games and activities for children and parents who speak little or no French)
In addition to organizing entertaining and educational activities, most CPEFs have an array of educational resources for families where they can borrow games, toys, books, puppets, films, cds, etc.
CPEFs offer services such as home visits to francophone parents with a baby of 0 to 24 months, early childhood Fairs where health professionals conduct assessments (language development, motor skills, hearing, sight testing and general health) with children three and four years old, training workshops on different topics related to early childhood and evenings for moms.
Also, your CPEF helps you better prepare your child for entry into a French school.
The majority of services offered by Manitoba CPEFs are described at www.cpefmb.org/index.php/services.
